Conquering the Alps (Sort Of): A Landlocked Surfer’s Alaïa Bay Adventure

Let’s be honest, I’m not aiming for a world championship. My reality is a bit different: I’m an average surfer, miles from the nearest ocean, nestled in a snow-capped mountain town. I’m the kind of surfer who occasionally catches a wave, mostly falls spectacularly, and yet clings to the dream of riding perfect barrels. But guess what? There’s hope for us landlocked wave warriors!

My recent trip to Alaïa Bay in the Swiss Alps proved that you don’t need an ocean to feel the stoke. This incredible wave pool offers a unique opportunity to improve your surfing skills, no matter your level (or lack thereof!). This post will detail my experience as a decidedly average surfer tackling the surprisingly challenging waves of Alaïa Bay, offering tips and tricks for fellow landlubbers looking for their surfing fix.

From mastering the basics on the smaller waves to attempting (and sometimes failing) the bigger ones, I’ll share my journey, the unexpected challenges, and the sheer exhilaration of catching a wave in the most unexpected of places. Forget the salt spray, embrace the crisp Alpine air! Ready to ditch the snow and ride some waves? Let’s dive in!
